YAHTZEE STRATEGY
Yahtzee involves a lot of luck, after all – you are rolling dice. However, there is a lot of strategy in Yahtzee. The strategy in Yahtzee is knowing which sets to complete after your initial roll.
For example, On your first roll let’s say you roll two 3’s a 1, 4 and 6 and you have not filled the box for 3’s in the upper section. The optimum set to complete are the 3’s, sure you can go for the 2 or the 5 to complete your small straight but this will leave you with two rolls left to roll 2 dice in hopes of a 2 or 5. If you go for the 3’s then this will leave you with 2 rolls left to roll 3 dice in hopes for at least one more 3. Your odds are higher on rolling another 3.
In Yahtzee, you should always try to have the odds in your favor. We cannot always roll what we need but we can choose to go down the path where the odds are in our favor. If you always roll the dice for odds that are in your favor and your opponent does not, then it will not be considered luck when you win the game.
Here is another Yahtzee strategy to look for, let’s say on your first roll you roll two 3’s and two 5’s and say a 1. In your upper section you have not filled the boxes for 3’s or 5’s. In this case you should try to complete the set of 5’s simply because a set of 5’s are worth more points than a set of 3’s. Always go for the most points possible, if the odds of completing the sets are the same as in this case.
Just remember – the best strategy for Yahtzee is rolling dice to complete sets where the odds are in your favor.
Also, try to complete your upper section first before you try to complete your lower section. Of course, if the dice are in your favor to complete a box in the lower section then go for it, if not then go for the 35 point bonus.
Soring the 63 points in the upper section for the 35 point bonus is huge. Do not underestimate how important the upper section bonus is towards winning the game.
